This evening I had the pleasure of enjoying the one woman show
The Return of Jackie Moms Mabley, Starring Sylvia Traymore Morrison.
It was written and directed by comedian/playwrite, Andy Evans.
First, let me just let me tell you if you haven't had the experience of seeing Sylvia T. Morrison, you are definitely in for something extraordinary. Here are some Sylvia facts.
the first black female impressionist;
hosted a roast for the 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee' Muhammed Ali;
is the first black associate writer for Saturday night live;
toured with the wonderful Whitney Houston; Author of "Almost There Almost: The many faces of Sylvia Traymore Morrison", "Jellybeans from Heaven".
She is the funniest most humble person I have ever had the opportunity to interview. The list goes on and on of all the accolades this beautiful spirit has blessed us with.
This production has been in motion for months and continues to grow audiences from all over the world. Sylvia has exceptional talent and she never ceases to amaze me because each time I see her, she offers a talent I hadn't experienced from her before. This show gives you a history of black excellence and it was the perfect tour for Black History Month. I call it, Black HERstory because it shares with the audience the history of the black woman, who we must never overlook and who has paved the way for us today.
In this show, Sylvia Traymore Morrison portrays Moms Mabley, Pearl Bailey, and the scat queen Ella Fitzgerald, just to name a few. If you ever get the opportunity to see Sylvia Traymore Morrison please do so! She is a phenomenal performer and knows how to draw in the crowd. Several people were there to support her, Singer Sylver Logan Sharp, Stylist Barry Fletcher, The People's Emcee, Dr. Renee Allen, and Sisters 4 Sisters Network, just to name a few.
